Rep. Stephen Webber wants to add protection for gays and lesbians to the state anti-discrimination law that currently lists race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry and disability. Webber would add sexual orientation. His bill got a hearing before the Urban Issues Committee, but he might as well have been talking to the Capitol maintenance crew. A few supporters with legitimate stories about discrimination came forward, but opponents lay low, knowing their position is not yet threatened in the culturally cramped General Assembly.

Webber thinks he won a victory by even getting the issue discussed. He is right. The road ahead might be long, but now at least a procedural roadblock has tentatively been pushed aside.
